Trouble in Doggyland

(if you know where this entry's title comes from, you get 20 bonus points.)

1.  I should have posted this earlier, but as it turns out, it's not nearly the disaster I'd originally thought it was.  We were at the vet on Friday and were terrified because it looked like Lily needed surgery, and quickly.  (The procedure is an analsaculectomy; should be self-explanatory.)  But now, 3 days and some antibiotics and lotions later, the swelling has gone down considerably and she seems to be getting better.  It's a procedure that both dogs are probably going to have to undergo at some point - they 'scoot' across the carpet all the friggin' time - but we can't really afford the $900-$1200 it costs.  And ultimately, as the vet said, no dog has ever died from this particular malady, so the fact that Lily's made some significant progress in just 3 days is encouraging.

2.  I've been obsessed with Blonde Redhead all weekend.  Let me back up; for the last 2 weeks or so I've been starting to get these ideas for songs that I've been completely unable to articulate on any instrument, and so I've been scrounging around in my iPod, trying to find something similar so as to give me a point of entry.  I'm not sure that Blonde Redhead is the sound I'm going for, but I'll tell you what - it was pretty amazing to be listening to them nonstop for 72 hours, and now I've got some other ideas to go along with the ones I already had.

3.  I've been in an HD-DVD frenzy lately, having binged on the latest Amazon sale.  Right now our HD library looks something like this:
  • Army of Darkness
  • Batman Begins
  • Blade Runner 5-Disc Edition
  • A Clockwork Orange
  • 2001
  • The Shining
  • Eyes Wide Shut
  • Hot Fuzz
  • Shaun of the Dead
  • The Host
  • A Scanner Darkly
  • King Kong
  • Pan's Labyrinth
  • Transformers
  • 300
  • Children of Men
  • The Big Lebowski
  • Goodfellas
  • The Departed
Yesterday we watched Transformers and Hot Fuzz (which looks noticeably better than its regular DVD counterpart); the day before we watched bits and pieces of Pan's Labyrinth and Blade Runner (Final Cut - and it's absolutely jaw-dropping).  I gotta say - I am all about 1080p.  I'm still of the opinion that while Blu-Ray may end up winning the format war, the ultimate solution will be digital distribution; in any event, watching movies in 1080p is where it's at, and I'm gonna scoop up as much as I can.  Even Kath is blown away - we'd watched Hot Fuzz several times already, but last night's HD viewing was the first time we felt like the 2nd half didn't slow the movie down.  HD even makes Transformers somewhat tolerable.

4.  HD also makes football more tolerable for me, and I watched the entirety of the Giants-Pats game.  I gotta say - that game was amazing, and I got everything I wanted out of it - the Giants played them close and can go into the postseason feeling pretty confident about themselves, the Pats were able to get to 16-0 while setting all the records they needed to set, and the game itself was exciting pretty much the whole way through.  All I really wanted out of that game was for the Giants to not completely embarrass themselves, and they certainly came through in that regard.

5.  Also found time to finish my 2nd playthrough of Mass Effect, this time as a Renegade.  Goddamn that game is awesome.  Even though I've got a lot more Points to get, I'm gonna hold off until they release DLC - hopefully in the form of new planets to visit.

Happy New Year, everybody!
