On Vox: M42 has begun!

I couldn't wait; I started an hour early.  (Hopefully I won't get in trouble...?)

Anyway, yeah.  All evening I had been strumming out this song idea that I've been working on for weeks, and I was getting frustrated because I couldn't find a solution to a particular problem, and then - as Kath was getting ready to turn in - I started to wonder if this M42 project should include works-in-progress, or should just be brand-new, clean slate ideas.

In the end, I decided to work with a clean slate - if only for tonight.  I want to get as many first ideas down as possible, rather than get bogged down by trying to finish every single one.  Also, I decided to forgo guitar and work on the keyboard, and to work in Reason rather than ProTools - working with loops sometimes helps my brain get uncluttered.  And so I came up with something that might end up being interesting, or it might not.

While I've got lots of uncertainties regarding this project, I know one thing for sure - I don't want to post any unfinished ideas just yet.  I tend to listen to my sketches obsessively, so much so that I then end up regarding them as finished ideas and so I never get around to really giving them the effort they obviously need.  Pretty much every recording I've posted over the last 16 months has that particular problem.  If I'm going to actually finish something, I don't want to glorify its first steps.

Anyway - 020108_1 is in the books, and on my hard drive, and if it ends up being something that winds up on the album, then that'll be great.

So, what's up.

1.  Fucking TIRED today.  Went to bed late last night, of course, as I was chomping at the bit to start recording, and the dogs woke up around 3 or so.  I just finished some Odwalla energy drink, and now I'm all jittery - and still tired.

2.  As for the recording... hmm.  Until last night, my routine would be to put a rough mix together of whatever I was working on immediately after I was done with it, so that I could listen to it before going to sleep, and then on the morning commute, and then during down time at work, etc.  There's two reasons why I'm not doing that this month, or at least for this M42 project:  (a) it's really easy to get burned out on a good idea that way, and (b) it also
prevents me from being as objective as I can be.  When I played it for Kath this morning before we left for work, I heard it with (somewhat) fresh ears, as I couldn't really remember what it sounded like, and immediately I knew that (a) it wasn't nearly as good as I'd originally thought, and (b) it had a lot of potential anyway.

3.  Kath is out with peeps tonight, leaving me all to my lonesome.  I will be recording at some point, obviously, although I may save that for the wee hours, since for some reason that's when I tend to really get going lately, creatively speaking.

And.... scene.

On Vox: i take it all back

So far, I'm not really getting anything new done; I've done some tweaking of what I did last night, though, and I'm liking how that's coming along.

Anyway, here's some phone cam photos, because my brain is frazzled and I can't think anymore.  And, you know what, fuck it; I'm putting up the link to the mp3, too.
