1. iTunes still doesn't have the new Beta Band, but they have the new Morrissey which I downloaded this morning. I gotta say, so far this is my #2 with a bullet, right behind "Vauxhall and I" - and I say that only because some of the actual music on "Vauxhall" is absolutely brilliant and would still be with or without Moz. (Consider the three-song punch of "Hold on to Your Friends," "The More You Ignore Me..." and "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself," which never fail to slay me.) The music here isn't quite as vital, but who listens to a Morrissey record for the music? More so than on any of his other albums, though, he's got an utterly compelling vocal delivery that almost reminds me of what it's like to listen to a Dylan record for the first time - I'm hanging on every single word and phrase. (I'm not comparing Morrissey to Dylan, mind you, but rather the experience of listening to them.) The Pitchfork review pretty much nails it on the head.

2. I was too stressed out after work yesterday to be productive, so I finally watched "28 Days Later..." on cable. Maybe it's because I saw it on television as opposed to a movie theater, but I can't quite see what all the fuss is about. I was really into the opening premise and definitely taken with the Dogma95 aesthetic, but the third act felt awfully contrived, even as it was making an interesting point. If anyone knows what the UK ending is, let me know - I believe I already know it, but I just want to make sure.

3. Speaking of productivity, there's really not a hell of a lot left for me to do in terms of the wedding. I finished my vows this morning; all I need to do is do one last tweak of the iPod (mainly cropping out silences and long fade-outs) and burn some emergency back-up CDs. Tomorrow I'm talking a quasi-half-day to pick up the tuxedos. The anticipation level is starting to get ridiculous.

4. Congratulations, Big Unit.

5. Very grateful to the powers that be that there haven't been any ridiculously good video games coming out recently, otherwise I'd be completely broke and way behind on the ol' wedding planning. Of course, considering what's coming up in the next few months, I guess I'll just say it'll be a meager holiday season for everyone else.
i'm really liking the new beta band. i don't have any of their older albums though--care to recommend one?

and woo-hoo for randy johnson! he'll always be a mariner to me.
cool--actually, i think i might have the three EPs--that's the one with the track that's in high fidelity, right?

the girls bring the lead guy to the hospital but can't save him. he dies and the girls decide that they'll have to just continue living their lives they way they have, constantly on the move. it's rather bleak by comparison to the ending that you saw, though at the same time, a bit less shiny-happy.

As far as the movie as a whole, I wasn't quite as blown away by it as everyone else was, though I saw it on a television myself and maybe that makes a difference. I do think it was pretty great, but more a case of "great premise being executed well enough" than anything else.
Yeah, that's what I thought it was. I like that ending better, to be honest. A happy ending doesn't make sense when the premise is so bleak.
From an aesthetics standpoint, yes, the alternate/UK ending is better, agreed. But I think you'd have to see it to grasp just how immensely bleak it is. Put me in a funk for about 3 hours. Not even joking.
Their last was more experimental...this one is classic Gomez. Even AMG gave it high marks...
Also, I've probably mentioned this before, but about 4 years back I tripped for the first time at a Radiohead concert, with Kid Kaola and Beta Band opening, and I peaked during Beta Band's set, while they were playing a song off of Hot Shots II...I don't have the album and have no idea what the title of the song is but I think it was the "biggest" single off the album. They've forever got a place in my heart as such.

I picked up the new album last night but haven't had a chance to hear it yet.
Only the Beta Band's eponymous album is on iTunes -- The 3 E.P.s and Hot Shots II are not. So I'm thinking they might never have the new one.
Yeah, you're right. I checked only a week ago, so I guess it was added since then.
