1. I missed the beginning of last night's Yankees/Sox game, but for a good reason - Kath's dad was in town and we ended up discovering this absolutely fantastic Italian place up on Ditmars; I forsee us going there many, many times in the future. I love my neighborhood, and I don't know it nearly well enough; I'm continually pleased by what we discover out here. All you Brooklynites have no idea what you're missing, so let me just say: bigger apartments / lower rents / better food / better subways. The end.

2. I did get home in time to see The Captain come through in the 8th. That was an epic at-bat; there was one point where Jeter had 2 strikes, Fenway was going crazy, and I was absolutely positive that Schilling was going to strike him out - Jeter ended up fouling two tough pitches, and so Fenway's energy subsided somewhat, and then BLAMMO - over the Monster.

3. The AVClub has a great feature up today: 18 Reasons Why 1997 Might Be the Next 1967. Personally, I'd always been of the opinion that 1989 was one of the greatest years in music history, but this feature makes a pretty compelling case for 1997. Which, incidentally, was 10 years ago, and now I feel INCREDIBLY OLD.
it is so weird because i was JUST saying that a lot of good albums came out in 1997. and it was a totally random conversation. basically i want the AV club to stop bugging me.
I liked that 1997 list, but I'd maintain that 1991 is just as - if not more - important a year. For starters:

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Pearl Jam - Ten
Nirvana - Nevermind
Tribe - Low End Theory
De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead
Slint - Spiderland
Afghan Whigs - Congregation
And here's my 1989 submission, omitting such classics as B-52's "Cosmic Thing", Rush's "Presto" and your personal favorite, Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood":

Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Faith No More - The Real Thing
Lou Reed - New York
Stone Roses - s/t
NIN - Pretty Hate Machine
Peter Gabriel - Passion
Phish - Junta
Pixies - Doolittle
XTC - Oranges and Lemons
The Cure - Disintegration
De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising
Camper Van Beethoven - Key Lime Pie
Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
