Still alive, still kicking. Work's been very slow this week.

I don't know about you guys, but my Facebook has been blowing up over the last few weeks with all sorts of people that haven't crossed my path in years; college... high school... hell, even summer camp - this morning, an old bunkmate sent me a pic from '91 or so, which is frightening and hilarious and NO YOU CAN'T SEE IT. So I'm getting all sorts of nostalgic.

So, since there's really nothing going on, I'm gonna do a little writing exercise. I'm setting my iPod to shuffle and we're just going to see what happens. (I fully expect a work-related nightmare to ensue the moment I get started, but I'm going for it anyway.) EDIT: It's quickly become apparent that I'm not going anywhere with this exercise's original intention; now it's just turning into an AV Club feature. Take that for what it's worth.

1. The Beatles, "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds", Love.
I got the Love album purely on jimmyether's review. I remember being pretty knocked out when I heard it, if only because I started to get excited to think about what the Beatles remasters will eventually sound like. Shortly after getting this, though, my buddy Mike sent me the original mono masters of Sgt. Pepper and Revolver, and I forgot I even had this.

2. Beck, "Lonesome Tears", Sea Change.
I really ought to give Sea Change another chance; I bought it the day it came out and for whatever reason I couldn't get through it. Still haven't actually listened to the whole thing back to front yet. That said, almost every song I've heard has been pretty great.

3. Morrissey, "I Like You", You Are the Quarry
IMHO, the best Moz album will always be "Vauxhall & I". I was excited to hear this album, though - everyone said the old Moz was back with a vengeance. That first single "Irish Blood English Heart" sold me, definitely. The rest of the record kinda fell flat - the songwriting is fine, but the production aesthetic is about 10 years too late.

4. Bowery Electric, "Black Light", Beat
NOW we're getting somewhere. I wanted blasts from the pasts for this exercise, now I'm getting them. I forget where I first saw these guys - I want to say I saw them open up for Tortoise - but in any event, I was kinda obsessed with them for a little while there. This album conjures up stoned and dimly-lit memories of my old apartment on Houston Street.

5. Ween, "Ice Castle", White Pepper
I always skip past this track. I love this record, but this song annoys me.

6. Blonde Redhead, "Anticipation", Misery is a Butterfly
The same friend who got me the Beatles mono mixes is also the guy who got me into Blonde Redhead; he got his hands on this record a few months before it came out and we were all deeply obsessed with it. Still am, in a way. This song is beautiful - I love how everything is arranged, and the production is pristine.

7. Pavement, "No Life Singed Her", Slanted & Enchanted
Let me be the asshole who loves Pavement but doesn't really like S&E except for "Here". Sorry. Crooked Rain opened the door, and Brighten the Corners (of all things) sealed the deal, and I guess I came late to the S&E party.

8. Pink Floyd, "Young Lust", The Wall
Oh, The Wall. I was deeply, deeply into The Wall back in high school; I had more than a few listening sessions with friends, totally sober, just soaking it all in. I have a memory of being with my dad, either going to or coming from his apartment on one of our weekends, and I would always take the car ride as an opportunity to DJ and show him all the stuff I was listening to. (Digression: I remember, shortly after my parents were separated, we were driving somewhere and listening to Phil Collins' "No Jacket Required", and "Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore" came on, and everything just kinda got weird.) Anyway, I remember being all proud of myself because I had devised this theory that the main riff in The Wall - the one that's in "Another Brick in the Wall", but that shows up in almost every song - is a perfect arc to the story. In this case, it's E-F#-G-F#, so it's an ascent followed by a collapse. Which is a very simplistic way of looking at what happens to the protagonist. My dad was not impressed, but I don't think he liked Roger Waters' voice very much.

9. Peter Gabriel, "Downside-Up", Ovo
Meh. I love PG, but some stuff just isn't very good, and this whole album fits that description.

10. Menomena, "Rose", I Am the Fun Blame Monster
Have I not heard this song before? I like Menomena, but I'm not sure I've gotten this far into this album.

Right on cue, work calls. Hey, it's 4:45pm! Might as well start getting busy now, for the first time all goddamned day.
